Lather, Rinse, Repeat: The Proper Steps to Take During National Hand Washing Awareness Week

Did you know that washing your hands was once considered controversial medical advice? Well, it was and we have Ignaz Semmelweis to thank for making hand-washing such a common practice today. At Shoe Cover Magic, we take germs seriously and are grateful to everyone in the medical field who works to keep us healthy; a large part by washing their hands and wearing shoe covers. In celebration of National Hand Washing Awareness Week, we want to take a moment to share some important information about washing your hands!

The most common instances when you should wash your hands include:

  • Before and after cooking and eating
  • Before and after being around someone who is sick
  • Before and after treating a wound
  • After using the bathroom
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After coming into contact with any bodily fluids

Most of the recommendations listed above are often considered common sense but because they are so simple, they can easily be forgotten. So, remember to wash your hands and employ sanitary habits in your daily life to stay as healthy as possible and to stop the spread of germs! The CDC has a robust list of when you should wash your hands and you can find their recommendations here.

Follow these steps to ensure you are washing your hands properly:

  1. Wet your hands thoroughly with clean water.
  2. Apply a quarter-sized amount of soap to the palm of your hand.
  3. Rub your hands together to lather the soap, making sure to cover all surfaces of your hands (including under your fingernails).
  4. Continue doing this for at least 20 seconds.
  5. Rinse your hands with clean water to remove all soap residue.
  6. Ensure you thoroughly dry your hands, as wet hands spread more germs than dry ones.

Washing your hands may seem like a simple task, but common mistakes like not washing your hands for long enough or not using enough soap can leave behind unwanted dirt and germs on your hands. You can find the exact steps the CDC recommends taking when washing your hands here.

Benefits of Washing Your Hands

There are many benefits to washing your hands, the most obvious being that washing your hands eliminates germs and reduces the risk of illness. Moreover, if you reduce the risk of getting sick, that means that you will reduce the chance of having to miss time at work, in school, or at any activities you need to participate in. By washing your hands, you will be making a conscious effort to better your personal hygiene, which in turn will make you feel more confident in your overall personal health.
